Cars The First Place Crew Hate | Part 2

Posted by Zach Fair on Mar 27th 2024

Today, we're delving into the realm of vehicular aversions—those cars that, for one reason or another, just don't sit right with us. While the term "hate" may seem strong, it's undeniable that certain vehicles evoke strong feelings of disdain among us. Join us as we explore some of the cars that have earned a place on our automotive blacklist here at First Place Auto Parts.

Honda CRX:

Our journey into the realm of automotive antipathy begins with the Honda CRX, a car that once enjoyed a modicum of popularity but has since fallen out of favor. Mike, our talented graphic artist, harbors a particular distaste for this diminutive hatchback. According to Mike, the CRX was plagued by an array of shortcomings, from its underwhelming performance to its propensity for mechanical maladies. Despite its touted attributes, such as its lack of power steering and purported speediness, the CRX failed to live up to its hype, leaving a trail of disappointment in its wake.

1966 Oldsmobile Toronado:

Next up on our list of reviled rides is the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado, a vehicle that elicits disdain from our very own Lewis. As the first American post-war mainstream front-wheel-drive car, the Toronado represented a departure from traditional automotive design—a departure that Lewis finds difficult to embrace. With its front-wheel-drive configuration and handling quirks, the Toronado left a bitter taste in Lewis's mouth, epitomizing everything he dislikes about modern automotive engineering.

Excalibur Automobiles:

Dallas, our resident new product expert, brings his unique perspective to the table with his disdain for Excalibur automobiles. Crafted in homage to the 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK, these vehicles attempt to blend vintage styling with modern mechanicals—an endeavor that Dallas finds decidedly unappealing. From their jarring juxtaposition of retro design cues to their lackluster performance, Excalibur cars leave Dallas cold, failing to capture the essence of automotive elegance they aspire to emulate.

AMC Pacer:

Last but certainly not least on our roster of despised drives is the AMC Pacer, a vehicle that holds a special place in my own automotive hall of shame. Fondly referred to as the "flying fishbowl" for its abundance of glass, the Pacer is a symbol of everything that went awry in automotive design during the 1970s. With its anemic powertrain and peculiar aesthetics, the Pacer represents a bygone era of automotive oddities that I, for one, am not eager to revisit.
